SAVED FOR SERVICE
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Matthew 20:28 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
As a follower of Christ, I should have the same priorities He had while He was here on earth. His priority was not to be served but to serve.
In my years of pastoring, I have had lots of people tell me they were looking for a church that would meet their needs and bless their family. Rarely have I had someone come to the church and say, “We are looking for a place where we can serve and be a blessing.”
What would the church look like if the concept was as followers of Christ we are called to serve and bless others?
Most of the time people seem more interested in “serve us” rather than “service.”
We are not saved by service, but we are saved for service! When we experience the grace of God to transform our lives, we immediately should have a priority shift. Because we have experienced God’s love, we should suddenly want to express that love to others in practical ways of serving others.
It is unfortunate that often within the church the longer someone stays in church the less they serve. The tendency seems to be that we get more interested in learning the truths of God’s Word instead of serving others. I believe we need to always be learning truth. But study without service always leads to spiritual stagnation.
Too many Christians become like the Dead Sea, they are always taking in information but never allowing that information to flow out of them in acts of service. The Dead Sea is dead because there is no outlet. Fresh water daily comes into the Dead Sea but there is no place for it to go.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit please show me who and how I can serve. Help me to focus on the needs of others. Forgive me for my selfish behavior.
