GOD’S TRUTH DOES NOT CHANGE
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.
Ephesians 4:11-14 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
God has given us apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to “equip God’s people” and “build up the church.” They are given to bring us into unity of faith and “knowledge of God’s Son” so we can measure “up to the full and complete standard of Christ.” This is so we are no longer immature like children.”
Immature believers are “tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching.” I have seen this many times in my years of ministry. There are certain people that want something new. They run after some new teaching that sounds exciting. Unfortunately, we need to realize that just because it is new doesn’t mean it is from God nor does it mean it is not from God.
I don’t want to go to either side. Some people reject anything that is new and other people seem to only want things that are new. The key is to be anchored in God’s truth. The Word of God should be the filter for anything that comes along.
God’s truth does not change. The message should always be the same. The methods of worship may change but not the message. There may be new applications of truth—but the truth is the same.
I have found that God’s Word is so amazing that I might read a passage I have read hundreds of times before and suddenly see a new application of that truth. There are layers of truth that we have not yet experienced. I believe there are experiences with God I have not yet encountered. God’s mercies are new every morning. He is also the same yesterday, today, and forever.
God is the same, but my understanding of God should always be growing. My understanding must be filtered through the Word. Just because someone used the right words and sounds spiritual doesn’t mean it is the truth.
I believe the Holy Spirit within us is a good source of discernment. The more time we spend with the Word of God the more we will have an internal check when something doesn’t line up with the Word.
There have been times when something on the inside of me just felt checked over someone’s teaching. I couldn’t point out the specific part that bothered me, but I felt that inner check that I needed to be careful. Each time as I would pray and examine what they were saying it would get clearer. We need to learn to listen to that nudge of the Spirit when something isn’t right.
Don’t go running after every new teaching. And don’t condemn every new teaching. Try them by the Spirit and the Word.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, please help me to test what is taught. Help me to study Your Word so that I have a good understanding of truth. I want to have a good vetting process of truth.
