TIME TO REMEMBER THE PROMISES OF GOD
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.” Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

TODAY’S THOUGHT
As we begin this journey to Christmas let’s think about the visit of the angel to Mary. Imagine the shock Mary felt when an angel shows up and tells her she will conceive a baby boy. Then he goes on to say this baby will be “the Son of God.”
Mary had questions. “How can this be?”
Like Mary, we often question God’s timing and God’s plan. Why would God choose this as the time for Jesus to be born? Israel was no longer a sovereign nation. They were ruled by the pagan Roman Empire. Economically the nation of Israel was oppressed with heavy taxes.
Spiritually the nation of Israel had not had a fresh word from God for over 400 years. There were no prophets leading the people to renew their commitment to Jehovah God. The nation was more into religion than relationship.
On top of those issues Mary was not yet married. She would be an outcast from society for becoming pregnant outside of marriage. The mark would last on her forever.
In the middle of all her questions and concerns the angel declares, “The word of God will never fail.”
This was the promise of the angel to Mary. It is also the promise of God to us today. In the middle of our disappointments, confusion, pain, and brokenness we must remember the word of God will never fail.
Every promise in God’s Word is ours. God has promised to always be with us and never forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He has promised that no weapon formed against us will prosper and every tongue that speaks against us will be silenced (Isaiah 54:17). He has promised that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). He has promised that we have been made more than conquerors through Him who loved us and gave Himself for us (Romans 8:37).
This is a time to remember the promises of God. They never fail.
