DEALING WITH HUMAN REASONING
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Let’s talk about the “strongholds of human reasoning.” We live in a society that is being destroyed by human intellect. I visited recently with a new graduate from a local university that is proud of its reputation for advanced scholarship. The student spoke about the intentional bias in the classroom for a very liberal viewpoint of history.
The student was told of the bias and didn’t really believe it existed until they tried an experiment. They had a class in which two papers were assigned. She worked very hard to research and present her first paper with perfect grammar, typing, and well footnoted research. The paper was presented from a conservative viewpoint. The paper received a low grade.
On the second paper the student did little research, intentionally had multiple typos and used poor grammar. She adopted a liberal view of the assigned subject. The grade on this paper was 100.
We must recognize we live in a culture that is battling for the minds of our students—and the whole population. They want to force us to think as they think and approve an agenda that is counter to the Word of God. We must do battle with these thought patterns.
The battle must start with us. We must control our thoughts and be sure that we are in alignment with the Word of God in every area of our lives. Norman Vincent Peale, a popular minister and author, was famous for saying, “Change your thoughts, and you change your world.”
I like to say we can pick what we ponder. I can’t pick all my thoughts, but I can pick the thoughts that I ponder. Martin Luther was quoted as saying, “You can’t keep the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest on your head.”
We must fight daily to get our thoughts into agreement with God’s Word. We must fight negative, destructive thought patterns.
