NO EXCUSE TO DO EVIL

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.
1 Peter 2:16 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
This is the time of year where our attention is drawn to the freedom that we have as citizens of the United States of America. We celebrate the founding of a nation built on the concept of personal freedom. Over the past 200 plus years hundreds of thousands of Americans have died so that we could have the freedoms we celebrate.
But there is a greater freedom that we have been given because of the death of Jesus on the cross. Because of His death we have been freed from the control and consequences of sin. Sin does not have dominion over those who have chosen to follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
Throughout Church history some have twisted this freedom to argue that because we are forgiven and free, we can do whatever we want and expect God’s grace to cover our sins. This is a dangerous and false teaching.
When Jesus set us free from the control of sin we became “slaves” to our Heavenly Father. Our freedom should never be an excuse to feed our flesh or rebel against God’s commands. Instead, we should be highly motivated to serve God in every area of our lives.
When I stood at an altar some 40 years ago and said “I do” to Cindy I was not only committing my life to love and honor her as my wife, but I was also willingly closing the door to any other female relationships in my life. To have a proper love relationship with Cindy I had to close the door to other relationships. I was not committing to love and honor her on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday—it was a commitment that involved every day of the week and every hour of every day.
Jesus died on the cross to free us from sin and open the door for us to have a love relationship with our Heavenly Father. Because of our love for our Father, we reject anything and everything else that would attempt to take His place in our lives. We do not use this freedom to live as our flesh desires.
