LISTEN MORE, TALK LESS
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
Philippians 2:4 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
From the moment we are born we are programed towards selfishness. We are all born with a sin nature that translates into a “me first” mentality. It is part of the redemptive work of Jesus that transforms us in an other’s minded person.
There's an old Chinese proverb that says, "Seek to understand before seeking to be understood." I believe this is the same sentiment Paul is giving us in our text today. He is wanting us to stop focusing on our interests and instead focus on the interest of others.
If we want to have authentic meaningful relationships, we must make a choice to think about others before we think about ourselves. When we think about the interests of others, we will find ourselves with some amazing friends.
Years ago, I learned that an important part of building relationships is learning to listen. My family sometimes made fun of me because when I’d meet a new person, I’d have 64 questions to ask about them. I tried to find some common ground to understand where the person came from, what their interests were, and what they did for a living. By showing interest in them as a person I was able to build a relationship of common ground.
Even introverts who prefer not to talk have something they like to talk about. They have something that excites them. When I find that thing, we can have a conversation and I can better understand them.
People know when you are interested in them or using them. I believe the only way to have meaningful relationships is to learn the interests of others.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit help me to see every person as valuable. Help me to show interest in people who are different from me. Help me to build authentic meaningful relationships.
