AT PEACE IN THE STORM

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.

Psalms 91:6 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Today we focus on the second portion of verse six, “nor the disaster that strikes at midday.” We have already learned that we don’t have to fear the terror of the night, the arrows by day, or the disease that stalks in darkness.

David’s reference to “the disaster that strikes at midday” is a reference to what is commonly called “acts of God.” Tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, hailstorms, etc... These are incorrectly attributed to be “acts of God” because man has no control of these disasters.

I believe these “acts of God” are results of the sin of Adam and Eve. Because of their sin the natural earth was cursed. I believe that prior to their sin the earth did not have natural disasters. The eco system was perfect without destructive storms.

I believe it is important to note that in Mark 4:39, Jesus rebuked the storm, and it became perfectly calm, demonstrating that God is not the author of such things. Otherwise, Jesus would never have contradicted His Father by rebuking something sent by Him. Jesus would not—and we should not—attempt to rebuke something that Father God has initiated. Therefore, storms and natural disasters are not “acts of God.”

It is interesting that this would be my passage for today. As I write this devotion this very morning at 5:05am I received an alarm on my phone informing me we were in a tornado warning area and needed to seek cover for the next 25 minutes. The wind and rain were horrific as a very fast-moving storm crossed our location. Despite the wind and rain there was no tornado, for which we were thankful.

It is fitting to me that this passage came up today as a reminder we don’t have to live in fear of disasters. We can be at peace even in the storm because we have chosen to follow David’s advice in the opening of Psalm 91–we chose to “live in the shelter of the Most High” and “find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” He is our “refuge, my place of safety.”

Only when we commit to stay in the presence of Father God are we able to live at peace and in rest. To be in His presence, we need to be in His Word. God’s Word is our source of wisdom and understanding.

I learned a long time ago that no one lives with the facts of life. We all live with our interpretation of the facts. Our interpretation of the facts is based on our past and present experiences and information.

The old computer adage is always correct—GIGO— “Garbage in, garbage out.” If I am putting garbage in my mind there will be garbage coming out of my perspective of life. I must allow the Holy Spirit to renew my mind through the Word of God. Let’s choose to be men and women of the Word.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father God, I thank You today that I do not have to live in fear. I don’t have to be afraid of the terrors of night, the attacks of others, the diseases that would attack my body, or the natural disasters that will come into my world. I choose to live in Your protective environment. I choose to believe Your Word and stand on the Word of God.
