A LONG LIFE THAT IS SATISFYING

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.

Psalms 91:16 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

David is spelling out God’s promises for those who chose to love God and abide under His shelter. In the New Living Translation (NLT), we learn that part of the promises God gives are “a long life.” While my personal devotional time is almost always from the NLT often, I will consult other translations to increase my understanding of a passage. In most translations the first part of this verse is, “With long life I will satisfy him….”

In the original Hebrew version, there is the word “saba” which is translated “satisfy.” It can mean “have enough, fill, be full, have plenty of, and satisfy.”

I believe the promises of God not only include a “long” life but a long life that is “satisfying.”

Just today I was listening to an audio book entitled, “Well-being: The Five Essential Elements.” It is a leading self-growth book in the marketplace of our day and deals with what the author describes as the five pillars of well-being. His keys are:

Career Well-being: feeling satisfied with what you do every day

Social Well-being: quality relationships

Financial Well-being: managing your money well

Physical Well-being: having the physical energy to do what you want to do

Community Well-being: contributing to your community

When I came to today’s promise of a long and satisfying life, I reflected on the five keys of Tom Rath’s book and realized those could be a blueprint for this life God wants to give to us.

As a follower of Christ, I believe God has a plan for my life and can’t be fully satisfied until I discover that plan and live it out daily. God also created me for meaningful relationships, so I need quality relationships. God desires to supply all my needs and for me to prosper so the Bible teaches how to be a good steward of what God gives to me. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit so I should work to have a healthy temple. Jesus came to serve so I must serve where I live.

Many studies show that a long-satisfied life is not laying on a couch watching TV and eating popcorn. We must be active in certain areas to feel like we are living a satisfying life.

You might want to review the list and ask yourself what areas you need to spend some time thinking through. Come up with a plan in each area. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit I want the “long and satisfying” life God promises to me. Show me what I need to do to partner with God’s desires for my life.

“Scroll down to share what you feel God is saying based on today’s reading.”
