PAUSE AND REST

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Fear of the Lord lengthens one’s life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.

Proverbs 10:27 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Fearing the Lord means we respect and honor what He asks of us. The problem is that many of us are so busy with life we don’t have time to listen to what God is trying to tell us.

Perhaps we should revisit the original Ten Commandments. A couple of years back I chose to listen to a podcast by a Jewish Rabbi teaching on the Jewish way of thinking. He went into a discourse on the command to rest on the sabbath. God commanded Moses, “Keep the Sabbath holy.” God said every week you take one day and make it holy to me by doing no work.

One of the interesting things about the command was for the Jews a day begins at sundown. So, the first thing you do every day is rest. In our western mindset the day ends at night and the last thing we do is rest. While it may seem like a small thing, the big thing is that we choose to rest first because we feel secure in who we are as children of God. We don’t have to work to prove our worth or value.

I know of a lot of people who work themselves to death because they are trying to prove their value. Their insecurities make it very hard to rest.

If we don’t pause and rest, we can’t hear from God. I believe God wanted us to have a day a week for no work so that we could focus on listening to Him. When we listen to God, we get a check-up to see how we are doing. It allows the Holy Spirit to point out inconsistencies and areas that we need to address.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Father God, I want to fear You. I want to serve You in every area of my life. I want Your will for me. Holy Spirit please help me to learn to slow down and rest so that I can listen to You.
