OUT OF THE DARKNESS
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
1 John 1:5-7 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
John gives us a great analogy of God. God is light— “and there is no darkness in him at all.” Darkness is always a picture of evil, things hidden, lostness, defeat, and depression. People living in darkness have a deep sense of hopelessness. There have been moments in my life when I felt darkness creeping into my heart and mind. Fortunately, those moments have been rare because I had the privilege to be raised in a home where there was a lot of light. God’s Word, prayer, and corporate worship was a regular part of my upbringing. In my times of darkness, I quickly turn to God’s Word, prayer, and worship with other believers in order to turn on the light. John points out it is impossible to claim to be a follower of Jesus and keep living in spiritual darkness. I believe John is saying the followers of Jesus don’t keep choosing to sin. We don’t live lives with hidden sin. We aren’t afraid to be honest and open about our struggles. Sin grows in darkness. Whatever we try to hide will eventually defeat us. Once we bring sin into the light, we destroy its power over us. There is no titanic struggle between light and darkness. Once the light is turned on in our lives the darkness must flee. Our part is to work to keep the light on. I believe we keep the light on when we take time to read God’s Word, pray, and worship with other believers. Are you living in the light? Is there any part of your life that you are trying to hide in the dark? Are you willing today to bring everything into the light?
