IT TAKES TIME AND PATIENCE
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!” When he had said this, he called out, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
Luke 8:8 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus tells the story of a farmer who goes out to plant seed in his field. The seed fell on four different types of soil—the hard wayside path, the rocky soil, the soil with weeds, and the good soil. Then Jesus declares, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
Cindy, my wife, has been known to tell me she thinks I need to get my ears checked. I tell her sometimes I don’t hear everything she says. She has a habit of talking as she is walking away, and I miss part of what she says. (I did go get a hearing test and it said I was good.)
Most of the time I hear Cindy’s voice very well. We can be in a crowded room, and she can call my name and I hear her. After over 40 years of marriage, I not only hear her voice I can tell by the tone of her voice whether things are good or bad. Sometimes we can be in a room, and she just looks at me and I know it is time to leave.
The secret to hearing and understanding Cindy’s voice and tone is one word: TIME. We have spent over 40 years together.
If we want to discern the voice of God, we have to intentionally spend time with God. When we read God’s Word, spend time with the Spirit of God in prayer, and spend time with the family of God in fellowship we are putting ourselves in a place to hear the voice of God.
This is how we develop “ears to hear.” We choose that we want to hear from God. We want to hear what God is saying to us. We want to follow His path and plan for our lives.
There are times when I miss what Cindy is trying to tell me. Just like there are times I miss what God is saying. But with patience and practice I am getting better on both fronts.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit I want to know Your voice. I want to have “ears to hear.” Help me to develop my spiritual ears daily.
