A HUMBLE LIFE
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Philippians 2:5-8 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is an interesting note about this passage. Most Bible scholars agree that this was one of the early hymns of the church. Paul included in this letter the words to a song the church would sing when they gathered for worship. Songs have the power to stick in our heads and remind us of powerful truths. This song lays out the incredible humility of Christ Jesus. He was equal to God because He was God from the beginning (John 1:1). Yet, Jesus willingly humbled Himself for us. He came in the form of a servant and was obedient to God’s plan by submitting to death on a cross. The humility of Jesus should be a reminder and example to each of us. Being followers of Christ means we humble ourselves. We live a life of humility. C.S. Lewis writes, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” Instead of thinking about our needs, wants, desires, and dreams we think of the needs, wants, desires, and dreams of others. We choose to live our lives to serve others. That is what Jesus did, that is what we must do. I believe when we live a life to serve others, we discover a life of fulfillment and wholeness. It is when we focus on ourselves that we that we find ourselves discontent and depressed. The best cure for depression is to go and serve someone else.
